LADIES COUNTY LEAGUE DIVISION THREE FINAL REPLAY

Firies 1-12

Rathmore 1-8

FIRIES captured the County League Division 3 title in Kilcummin on Saturday evening in yet another pulsating game of ladies football. The replayed final resulted in a 1-12 to 1- 8 victory for the Firies girls over a gallant Rathmore side and this contest was nearly every bit as exciting as last weekend's clash in Fitzgerald Stadium. The Kilcummin stand was packed to capacity as both sets of fans passionately roared on their teams. Firies played with the aid of a stiff breeze in the first half and led at the interval by 0- 7 to 0-6. Rathmore captain Caroline Reen was very much to the fore once more in this game and for the second week in succession she contributed five great points from play. Rathmore went into the game without star full forward Noreen Murphy who injured her shoulder in the drawn game and her loss proved to be decisive. Reen opened the scoring in the first minute, but attacking half-back Kathy Ann Myers replied with a point in the fourth minute.

Three Una O'Mahony frees in succession in response to another Reen point and an Eileen Murphy free left one between the sides. Christine Buckley added a couple from play to extend Firies lead to three, but the doughty Rathmore girls drew level as the interval approached. An Una O'Mahony point from play gave Firies a narrow interval lead. Firies made light of the elements in the second half as the brilliant Emma Sherwood drove her side forward from midfield. Usa O'Connor and Maura O'Connor both worked extremely hard in attack and Firies gained their reward when Una O'Mahony goaled in the 41st minute. Rathmore to their credit kept fight- ing and grabbed a goal of their own when Elaine O'Leary brilliantly chipped Doreen O'Connor. A Caroline Reen Point reduced the margin to just one point with ten minutes remaining. Firies regrouped and finshed well once more. Just like the drawn game in Fitzgerald Stadium their fitness and will to win proved the decisive factor.

An excellent final ten minutes saw, Una O'Mahony convert two frees. O'Mahony contributed 1-7 in a top class display. Christine Buckley's insurance point led to scenes of joy for the Firies girls and their back room team.

The inaugural County League title was theirs but both sides can be proud of their displays in these two epic encounters. The Ladies County League now comes to a close and focus will quickly turn to the Championship season which will com- mence in two weeks time.
