Conditions were not good with heavy rain falling throughout the game making underfoot conditions very slippery. This was a "do or die" game for the locals and they duly delivered with a gutsy performance on the night. Firies started brightly and before half time their captain Vincent Horgan had found the Cromane net twice with two great strikes. At the short whistle the home side led on a scoreline of 2-1 to Cromane's 0-4. But this game was far from over and within 10 minutes of the restart Cromane had drawn level on the score of 2-2 to 1-5. The game was up for grabs now and Firies upped their performance considerable with young Mike Daly scoring a great goal & a few excellent points. Brian Foley scored a well worked point in the last minute to give Firies a resounding victory on the final score of Firies 4-07 Cromane 2-07. Firies have now got 5 points on the table from 5 games with 2 games remaining against Mid Kerry neighbours Beaufort and Glenbeigh/Glencar. A win in both of these games would surely guarantee Firies a semi-final place. Firies will play Beaufort away in the next round on this Friday evening. Kerry Junior League Div 6 Date : Friday 16th May 2008 Laune Rangers : 1-10 Firies 1-10 The Firies B team played their first game in the County Junior League on last Friday evening the 16th May 2008 in Killorglin against the local side Laune Rangers. Weather and pitch conditions were near perfect in Cloon for this hard fought encounter. Laune Rangers started in whirlwind fashion with a point after 2 minutes from former Kerry underage star Billy O' Sullivan and mid way through the half their lively wing forward Eamon Carey goaled from close range to give the Firies custodian Brendan Quirke no hope. In this first half Firies were finding it very difficult to settle and the half time whistle could not come fast enough, at half time Firies were trailing 1-7 to 0-3 and things were no looking good for the 2nd half. Whatever the management team of Paudie Daniel, Tim Breen and Timmy Casey said at half-time we will never know but it certainly had the desired effect as Firies completely over ran their opponents in the 2nd period playing them off the pitch. Young corner forward Mike Daly kicked some fantastic points and he is certainly a player for the future. Mid-way through the half the captain & veteran full-forward Vincent Horgan rattled the Laune Rangers net to score a great goal. At the final whistle both sides were deadlocked at 1-10 each. Firies played some outstanding football in this 2nd period and is very encouraging for the rest of the campaign. Firies will play Sneem at home in the next round on this Friday evening. Firies : Brendan Quirke, Kieran Breen, Donal Donoghue, Sean O' Sullivan, Tim Foley, Donal Spring, Paudie O' Sullivan, Donal O' Connell, Gearoid Browne, James Culloty, Shane O' Sullivan, Brian Foley, Eamon Foley, Vincent Horgan (capt), Mike Daly. Subs : Colm Hickey, William Kelliher and Mike Connor. Referee : Mike Hickey (Milltown) ***********************
